MN VDL welcomes new pathologist to expand swine, bovine and poultry health

The Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory at the University of Minnesota College of Veterinary
Medicine has welcomed Dr. Carlos Lopez-Figueroa as a diagnostic pathologist and member of
its faculty.
Lopez-Figueroa joined the college’s Department of Veterinary Population Medicine (VPM) as an
assistant professor in August 2025. He brings a strong commitment to diagnostic excellence,
research, and education in the field of veterinary pathology. He has extensive diagnostic
experience across a wide range of species, including food animals, poultry, equine, and
companion animals.
Lopez-Figueroa’s career spans academia, private diagnostic laboratories, and the
pharmaceutical sector. He has evaluated surgical specimens in companion animals, contributed
to toxicologic pathology studies, and recently completed a PhD focusing on swine infectious
diseases, including the innate immune response to the Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea Virus
(PEDV).

poultry health,” Lopez-Figueroa says. “This role allows me to contribute meaningfully to the
industries that depend on these species, while continuing to serve companion animal
medicine—fulfilling the vision I had when I first embarked on a career in veterinary pathology.”
Originally from Spain, Lopez-Figueroa earned his veterinary degree and completed a residency
in pathology at the Autonomous University of Barcelona. He achieved board certification as a
Diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Pathologists in 2021.
