Specimen Requirements

1) tissue swab 2) lesion swab 3) oropharyngeal swab 4) blood swabs (not recommended) 5) environmental sources

Dacron or Rayon swabs of the lesion or tissue saturated as much as possible are placed in 1ml of 70% ETOH or MTM in a screw top plastic. Please place this specimen tube in a whirl pac or ziplock type bag for secondary containment. Please contact the lab if you need transport reagents.

Styrofoam box with an outer cardboard shell. Place the submission form in a separate whirl pac or ziplock type bag. This sample preparation does not need to be refrigerated.

Frozen gel packs are recommended but refrigeration is not required

Description

Results are reported the following business day if samples are received by noon the day before. The specimen preparation described will inactivate bacteria on the swab and so is not suitable for obtaining typical culture and sensitivity results. Do not submit untreated swabs for this Tularemia PCR. The purpose of the sample inactivation is to facilitate safe transport and laboratory handling. Please contact the lab with questions. 

Test update

Beginning August 12th 2024, The Minnesota Veterinary Diagnostic Lab in St.Paul will begin offering a PCR test for the detection of Francisella tularensis in clinical specimens. Specimens (see below) received by noon will be reported the afternoon of the next business day. Sample collection and preparation is unique for this agent. Please see the instructions below.
